A Smarter, More Sustainable Print Experience

The KAUST IT Department has launched the Green Printing Program as part of our ongoing efforts to modernize services, enhance security, and support the university’s sustainability goals.

Through this initiative, we are replacing outdated printers across campus with energy-efficient, multi-functional devices. These new printers consume less power, reduce waste, and offer a more secure and streamlined experience for the KAUST community.

Printing is now smarter and more flexible. Community members can submit print jobs from their workstation or mobile device, then release them securely using QR code authentication via the KAUSTCentral or MyQX apps. Documents are held in a personal queue until verified, ensuring confidentiality and reducing the risk of unclaimed printouts.

As part of this transition, individuals should no longer select the "SMART" print queue when printing. Instead, please choose the "Green Printing" queue to take advantage of the new system.

In addition to mobile options, individuals can access and manage their print queue directly from a laptop or desktop by visiting the Print Portal. This provides greater control and visibility into pending jobs and recent activity, all from the convenience of a web browser.

The Green Printing Program also provides departments with insights into printing patterns and volumes, encouraging more sustainable use and cost-effective practices. It is a step toward a more efficient and accountable print environment, delivering tangible benefits for faculty, staff, researchers, and administrative teams across campus.

This initiative reflects IT’s broader strategy to deliver technology solutions that are secure, people-focused, and aligned with the university’s long-term sustainability vision.

FAQs

Benefits from Green Printing
  1. Green Power Consumption: the new printers are designed to consume less energy, reducing our environmental impact.

  1. Enhanced Security: to protect queued print jobs, ensuring your documents remain confidential.

  1. Smart Printing Features: we have optimized the printers to support new smart printing features allowing users to authenticate devices using QR codes and to print directly from their mobile devices using the KAUSTCentral App.

Impact on Current Printers
  • Shared A3/A4 Printers: new printers will be installed on each floor in academic and admin buildings, with additional units in high-demand areas. Both old and new printers (Smart and Green printers) will run until the program phases out all old Smart printers to minimize the impact of this transition.

  • Single-User Printers: These will be reduced based on usage data. All affected printers' owners will be contacted for planning.
