From Project to Planner: Simplifying Work Management at KAUST

15 September, 2025

Project for the Web Is Retiring. Here is What You Need to Know

Microsoft will retire Project for the Web and the Project and Roadmap apps in Teams in August 2025. Here is what changes, what to do, and where to get help at KAUST.

FYI Timeline: After the retirement window in August 2025, opening Project for the Web will redirect you to Microsoft Planner.

What Is Changing

  • Project for the Web retires: after August 2025, it redirects to Planner.
  • Project and Roadmap tabs in Teams: these will stop working. You will need to re-pin them using Planner.
  • Roadmaps will not migrate automatically: recreate them in Planner Portfolios.
  • Premium features move into Planner: capabilities such as Goals, Sprints, Task History, Dependencies, and Baselines will be available directly in Planner.
  • Licensing stays the same: no changes are required. Existing Project licenses map to Planner Premium.
  • Project Power App is renamed: it becomes the Planner Power App.
  • .mpp files are not supported: Microsoft Project desktop files cannot be imported directly. Microsoft suggests a Power Apps or Accelerator approach if needed.

Why This Matters

Microsoft is simplifying project and task management into one hub: Planner. Most teams will have fewer apps to manage and a more consistent experience in Microsoft 365. If your team relies on Roadmaps or .mpp imports, plan ahead. Microsoft is also adding Copilot features to Planner to provide AI powered assistance for planning and tracking work.

What You Should Do

  1. Audit your projects: identify where you use Project for the Web, Roadmaps, or related Teams tabs.
  2. Recreate Roadmaps: move them into Planner Portfolios before the August 2025 deadline.
  3. Update Teams tabs: replace Project or Roadmap tabs with Planner tabs.
  4. Explore Planner Premium: review advanced features for complex work.
  5. Bookmark the Planner homepage: planner.cloud.microsoft is the new entry point.
