Shifting into high gear: 5G Coverage at KAUST

03 January, 2021

KAUST IT is happy to announce that KAUST now has 5G coverage. enabling everyone at KAUST to enjoy better mobile connectivity.

How to get 5G?

Mobily, STC, and Zain operate the 5G services. You need to choose your provider and contact them directly. You will need a 5G capable mobile device to use this service.

Is my area covered?

We have prepared a map that shows 5G coverage within KAUST. Keep in mind that you may find yourself outside of 5G coverage areas as you are mobile. Manufacturers usually program devices to automatically switch to 4G or LTE when 5G is not connected.
When looking at the maps, the circles approximate the area of coverage. Signal strength and connection speeds vary.

How fast is my 5G going to be?

It depends on the distance from the tower and how many people are connected. Since this is a commercial urban setup, expect that they will use the lower speed higher coverage solution. It will still be faster than 4G but not to the maximum ability of 5G. If you want to understand the tech differences, you can read more here.

Please keep in mind that KAUST IT does not operate the 5G services; you need to direct all queries and support requests directly to the service provider.

Is 5G Safe?

Yes, 5G is safe. The KAUST Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) department has reviewed national and international guidance as well as available literature and agrees with the conclusion 5G is safe, much like 3G and 4G technologies.

Additional information about the safety of cellular technologies, including 5G, is available on the  HSE website
