Reminder: Windows Compatibility with Apple M-Chip Devices

06 August, 2025

Apple M-Chip Devices and Windows OS Compatibility

As a friendly reminder, Apple M-chip devices introduced in recent years do not support Windows OS through Bootcamp. If you are currently using Windows on an older Mac device and considering an upgrade, please keep this important compatibility detail in mind.

Why Upgrading Your Device Matters

Operating systems regularly reach their end-of-support dates, and continuing to use outdated software significantly increases security risks and reduces overall productivity. Keeping your device updated is essential to:

  • Maintain strong protection against cyber threats.
  • Ensure smooth and reliable device performance.
  • Stay compatible with necessary software and tools.

Additional Recommendations

  • Regular Data Backups: Always back up important files regularly to avoid data loss during device or OS transitions. KAUST provides the Atempo Lina backup service to help securely manage your backups.
  • Software Compatibility: Before transitioning to new hardware or operating systems, please confirm that the software you use is fully compatible by consulting with your department or division.
  • Timely Device Ordering: Begin the device ordering process as early as possible to accommodate procurement processing times and avoid delays.

Recommended Actions

  • For Windows: If you rely on Windows, please coordinate with your department or division business manager to secure a compatible Windows device, such as a Dell XPS or Dell Inspiron laptop. Alternatively, if you have access, you can directly order a device through the KAUST Procurement System on the KAUST Portal, where available devices are listed.
  • For MacOS: If you prefer MacOS, transitioning to an Apple M-chip device will provide enhanced performance, security, and compatibility specifically optimized for MacOS.

How to Keep Your Device Secure

  • Promptly restart your device when KAUST IT sends updates.
  • Stay alert for notifications about important security patches.
  • Ensure your operating system remains supported and up to date.
