Reminder to upgrade to Windows 11 before Windows 10 support ends

As we begin a new semester, this is a reminder to all KAUST staff, students, and faculty that Microsoft will end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025.

After this date, devices running Windows 10 will no longer receive:

  • Security updates.
  • Software patches.
  • And may not receive the support required to securely connect to the KAUST network.

To stay secure and maintain uninterrupted access to KAUST IT services, please follow the three steps below:

Step 1: Check Your Windows version

  • Press Windows + R.
  • Type winver and press OK.
  • A window will appear showing your version.
  • If it says Windows 11 – you’re all set, no further action is required.
  • If it says Windows 10 – continue to Step 2.

Step 2: Back up your files

Before upgrading, back up your important data using Atempo Lina (KAUST’s official endpoint backup service). Atempo Lina Backup – Learn More

*Please note: KAUST IT cannot recover files lost during the upgrade process.

Step 3: Upgrade to Windows 11

To upgrade:

  • Do not use VPN or attempt the upgrade remotely.
  • The upgrade typically takes 30–60 minutes and will include several restarts.

If Your Device Cannot Be Upgraded

Some older hardware is not compatible with Windows 11. If your device has reached end of support, you will have already received an email from KAUST IT.

To avoid service disruption, please arrange for a replacement before October 14, 2025 by:

  • Contacting your department’s business administrator, or
  • Ordering through the KAUST Procurement Portal.

Apple devices running Windows

Since Boot Camp is no longer supported (Learn why), Apple devices should not run Windows OS.

You should either:

  • Replace the device with one that natively supports Windows 11, or
  • Remove the Windows partition and continue using macOS only.

Note: Targeted emails have already been sent from IT to anyone who needs to update their Windows version. This message is a general reminder.
