Blocked Emails in Gmail? Now You’ll Know Exactly Why

Clearer Attachment Security in KAUST Gmail
A clearer warning now appears in KAUST Gmail when an attachment is blocked, plus what to do next so you can still get the file safely.
In the past, emails from external accounts containing attachments were blocked for security reasons, which may have caused you to miss important messages.
To avoid this, we have improved our email protection. From now on, attachments will be removed, but the email message itself will still be delivered. This ensures you receive all your emails while maintaining security.
When an attachment is removed, the email will clearly indicate that the attachment was blocked so you know exactly what happened and what to do next.
What you will see in Gmail
If an incoming email contains a file type that may pose a security risk, the attachment is removed and replaced with a clear notice.

What changed
  • You still receive the email.
  • Only the risky attachment is removed.
  • A clear notice explains why it happened and what to do next.
What you should do if an attachment is blocked
Do not ask the sender to keep re-sending the same attachment. Instead, ask them to share the file using a trusted platform:
When you message the sender, you can copy and paste this:
Hi, my KAUST email blocked the attachment for security reasons. Could you please share the file using OneDrive, SharePoint, or Google Drive instead, and send me the sharing link?
Why this matters
Research and academic work often involves datasets, scripts, compressed folders, and technical files. Some file types can carry harmful code, even unintentionally. Blocking high-risk attachments helps protect:
  • Your KAUST account and data
  • Your device and lab systems
  • The wider KAUST network
The goal is simple: protection without confusion.
