Upgrade Your Mac by October 31

17 September, 2026

If you use a Mac at KAUST, take a moment to check which version of macOS you're running.

Does this affect me?

If you're already using macOS Sequoia 15 or Tahoe 26, you don't need to do anything right now.

If you're running macOS Sonoma 14 or an earlier version, please upgrade your Mac by October 31, 2026.

First, check your macOS version

It's quick:

  1. Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner of your screen.
  2. Select About This Mac.
  3. Look for the macOS name and version number.
Sequoia 15 or Tahoe 26 - You're already on a version currently supported by KAUST IT.
Sonoma 14 or earlier - It's time to upgrade.

You can always check which operating systems are currently supported by KAUST IT on our Operating Systems page.

Upgrading a KAUST-managed Mac is straightforward

You don't need administrator rights.

Before you begin, connect your Mac to power, make sure you have a stable internet connection, and back up any important files.

Open Self Service+ from your Applications folder, find the macOS upgrade available for your device, and follow the instructions.

We've put together a step-by-step guide to walk you through the process:

The upgrade can take some time and your Mac will restart, so choose a time when you won't need it for a while.

Have an Intel Mac? It's also time to start planning ahead

Apple's transition away from Intel-based Macs is reaching its final stages.

Some Intel Macs can still run currently supported versions of macOS, so having an Intel Mac does not necessarily mean you need to replace it immediately. However, future macOS releases are moving away from Intel support.

You can check your Mac by opening Apple menu () > About This Mac. If you see Intel listed as the processor, you're using an Intel-based Mac. Newer Macs will show an Apple chip such as M1, M2, M3, M4 or M5.

If your KAUST-provided Mac uses an Intel processor, this is a good time to start planning for its eventual replacement with your divisional business manager, particularly if the device is important to your day-to-day work or research.

Why are we asking you to upgrade?

Keeping macOS current helps your Mac continue receiving important security updates and maintain compatibility with the applications and services you use at KAUST.

Older versions eventually stop receiving security updates, while older Mac hardware can no longer move to newer supported versions.

October 31 deadline

After October 31, 2026, Macs that remain on an unsupported version of macOS may have access to KAUST services restricted to help protect KAUST systems and data.

What if my Mac can't upgrade?

If Self Service+ doesn't offer you a supported macOS upgrade, your Mac may not support a newer version.

For a KAUST-provided Mac, speak with your divisional business manager about replacement options.
